Communication Skills Applied

Active Listening at Work (CA017)

Description

Your co-worker is trying to explain a new project you’ll both be working on. But your attention keeps wandering to the email alerts popping up on your screen every few seconds. You suggest chatting about the project later when you’re less busy. Now your co-worker looks annoyed with you, and you’ve no idea what the project’s about.

Active listening is a communication skill that can help you focus more mindfully on a conversation. When you use active listening in the workplace, you can reduce misunderstandings and strengthen rapport with your co-workers. But to use this skill well, you need to spot and overcome barriers, such as visual distractions or anxiety. And it’s not just about listening —you have to respond to the speaker effectively, too.

By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:

  • Recognize what active listening is and why it matters in workplace communication
  • Identify common barriers to active listening and ways to overcome them
  • Distinguish between effective and ineffective active listening responses in common workplace interactions

Why take this course?

You’ll learn about active listening, why it’s so important, and typical barriers to using this skill. The course will also show you how to overcome those barriers and identify effective responses.
